08 October 2007

lately i've been thinking

about what Niels Bohr said, reportedly in reponse to questions on the nature of language in 1920:

"We must be clear that when it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry. The poet, too, is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images and establishing mental connections."

though it seems his point here is as much about our perception of materiality/corporeal/"deep reality" as [about] language - no there there until measured (interpreted/communicated) et cetera.

anyway, this goofy Borgesian notion crossed my mind - wouldn't it be a gas if my entire history, as i assume it, has been a direct result of or response to this statement.

"i'm not sure i know what i'm talking about" she sd. again.

Allen Bramhall

i occasionally revisit Allen's work at The MAG from 2005 i find his fluidity inspired. here's some:
:::::

SLIGHT

the crust remained vacant while tests screw the jar tight. sudden for any reason became a verb for new morass. sweet muddiness while waking against monsters referred to as structure. ah structure, muttered incoming Lenin, I have use in years as trusts. (this was where America dented the particle and felt front merge with back).

*check out his blog for more links to his work etc

Anita Roddick

I just found out that one of the most inspiring, amazing people in the world, Anita Roddick, died on September 10th. Very sad to hear this. . .

You can read the NYTimes article here. or her full bio at AnitaRoddick.com. There's also an interesting interview with her in Satya.

Check out some great photos of her on Jacob Holdt's website here.

new link - 2003 phillysound fest at PENNSound w/emphasis on Pattie McCarthy

Tom Devaney just sent me the link to the 2003 PhillySound Festival recordings at the PENNSound website. lots of great listening here but MOST ESPECIALLY Pattie McCarthy's reading. A++ as always though I can never find her online recordings if there are more (please forward 2me if u spot any). read Anna Eyre's review of Verso here. get one of her books ASAP before they're gone!

here's something from Verso, one of the best books of poetry i've read, frankly ::

       nonesuch auguries, egads.
we will have none of that.
       saying again this place is
       this, only moreso.
       here the air
       rises from beneath it
       seems & is heavy salty--
whereas there the air is sharp,
       takes corners, comes around
       corners sharply.
it hasn't rained for fourteen days. the birds
have thwarted me & eaten the verbena seeds.
I smell like a girl & tire of profundity.
